2 goals for Cavs’ Caris LeVert in the 2022-23 season
By Zane Harris
#2: Shoot 33% from three, and 50% from two
The first part, per se, of the second major goal for Caris LeVert this season is to shoot at least 33% from three. This is something that Cleveland desperately needs from him this season. Last year, the Cavs were a middle-of-the-road three-point shooting team. LeVert did not do much to help the cause. Last season, he shot 31.3% from three on 3.5 three-point attempts per game. For reference, the NBA league average for three-point percentage in the 2021-2022 season was 35.4%.
The goal of LeVert hitting 33% from three this season is not a huge ask by any means. It is a mark that he has achieved three times throughout his six-year NBA career. However, LeVert has not shot above 33% from three since the 2020-2021 season.
With him potentially seeing the court a bit less than he has become accustomed to over the past few seasons, it may be more achievable to shoot 33% from three this year as his three-point shots attempted will likely take a dip.
If LeVert is able to achieve this goal in the 2022-23 season, it would mean big things for the Cavaliers. The team needs as much floor spacing as it can get from the wing and bench players. With Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley playing such a big role on the team, wing players like LeVert are essential in spacing the floor and giving the big men room to work in the post.
The second part of the goal here is for him to hit 50% of his two-point looks.
This would be an incredible mark for LeVert to hit in 2022-23. He at times is an inconsistent scorer and throughout the season, this inconsistency can make the difference between winning and losing games. If LeVert can mold into a more consistent scorer, whether that is ultimately as a starter, or crucial bench guy, it would pay dividends.
Throughout his career, LeVert has not been able to consistently maintain a 50% or better two-point field goal percentage. Out of his six seasons in the NBA, he has only been able to meet this mark once. Despite this, he has been within two percent of 50% all but one year of his career. If a couple of tweaks are made this offseason and if Cavs point guard Darius Garland can continue to develop as a facilitator, it could be enough for LeVert to be consistently hitting this goal year after year.
Point being, becoming a more efficient scorer should be the top priority for Caris LeVert this season.
From there, we’ll highlight the first goal, which is an all-emcompassing one.
