3 reasons the Cavs should trade for Donovan Mitchell
By John Suchan
The Cleveland Cavaliers should consider trading for the seemingly disgruntled guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz. The Jazz recently had their head coach Quin Snyder resign and that has left the potential for the team’s star point guard to want to move on as well, based on a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski it appears.
Mitchell was drafted in 2017 by the Denver Nuggets but traded that day to the Jazz.
Mitchell is an excellent scorer and a good defender. There are three reasons and potentially some more of why a trade to Cleveland would be a good idea. Let’s first look at one possible trade framework.
The trade
The Cavs and their guard Collin Sexton have still not agreed on a new contract. Trading Sexton, via sign-and-trade here, would be a good move for both teams. Mitchell’s value would also require the Cavs to give the Jazz another player. In this case, I’d send Caris LeVert, who is currently set to be on an expiring deal, to Utah. While the Cavs experimented with LeVert on the team late last season after they made a trade for him, he was inconsistent, and didn’t help enough to get the team to the playoffs.
This move would give Sexton a fresh start with a new team, with seemingly a multi-year deal, and give LeVert another opportunity to make a difference for a new team. Both players transitioning to the NBA Western Conference, where there tends to be more of an open run-and-gun type of play, might suit both players better at this stage in their careers. Perhaps LeVert could be a player Utah looks to extend, or he could be an expiring trade asset for them.
To seal the deal Cleveland would have to give Utah multiple future first-rounders of value, with me suggesting a 2025 and 2027 first that’s top-3 protected. Maybe those would be of legit interest for Utah.
The trade would be good for both teams but here are three reasons this move makes sense for the Cavs now.
