NBA Draft: 5 wings Cavs could take if they keep first-round pick
NBA Draft: 5 wings Cavs could take – Ochai Agbaji, Kansas Jayhawks
Every season an upperclassman takes a major step forward and flies up draft boards. Last season Davion Mitchell and Chris Duarte both went in the lottery as older players, and both have had solid rookie seasons (especially Duarte). The player in this year’s draft most likely to make such a leap is Ochai Agbaji, breaking out in his senior season.
At 6’5″ Agbaji is more on the 2/3 end of the size spectrum, but that doesn’t mean the Cavs can’t rely on him to start at the 3. He is hitting 44.5 percent of his 3-pointers this season on an elite 6.7 attempts per game. He has expanded his offensive game in his fourth season, becoming more confident handling and finishing in traffic. He does better in transition or advantage situations, as his lack of elite speed or explosion as a creator will limit him from being a star-level offensive hub.
As a role player, a knockdown shooter who can attack closeouts and take on mismatches, he should excel. The Cavs have Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, and whoever starts at the 2 between Collin Sexton or Caris LeVert. That’s plenty of shot creation; a 3 who can nail shots and doesn’t need a ton of touches is just what the doctor ordered.
Defensively, Agbaji is probably the best on this list, with the strength to guard up at least one position. He’s not the longest or most athletic defender, but he knows exactly where to be and he battles on every possession. He profiles close to what Isaac Okoro brings defensively, both in quality and role, but with a lot more offensive juice and spacing.
