Takeaway #1: This trade shows Koby Altman’s continuous attempts to surround the Darius Garland/Collin Sexton duo with proper talent, in the event Sexton’s back in this sense

It’s no secret that the construct of the Cavaliers’ roster has been vastly improved over the last couple of seasons. Since the small backcourt tandem of Darius Garland and Collin Sexton has become a focal point of the team’s success, now-President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman has made multiple moves to surround them with the proper talent.

It started with trading Jordan Clarkson which meant more on-ball opportunities for the young guards. A trade for Andre Drummond added a temporary safety blanket lob threat to improve vertical spacing on the team. An opportunity saw the Cavs acquire Jarrett Allen for pennies on the dollar, giving the team even more vertical spacing and yet another safety blanket.

Seeing just how much of an offensive workload the small backcourt had dealt with, Altman then sought after Ricky Rubio, allowing for more off-ball opportunities for Garland/Sexton and lessening their offensive workload. This was of course prior to Sexton’s meniscus tear from back in November; that offseason move was a logical one, though.

And another trade centered on Lauri Markkanen improved the spacing of the team from the offseason.

Now, with injuries forcing Garland to be the only solidified shot creator/facilitator/ball-handler, Altman made yet another move to lessen the offensive workload for the recently-named All-Star in trading for Rajon Rondo and now Caris LeVert.

The continued aggression goes to show how bought-in the Cavaliers are and just the extent they’ll go to make sure the team has little-to-no hiccups.
