In a move that seemed months in the making, the Cleveland Cavaliers finally pulled the trigger and traded for Caris LeVert of the Indiana Pacers. The trade saw the team part ways with the expiring contract of Ricky Rubio, a lottery-protected first-round pick, and multiple seconds. Aside from LeVert, the Cavs also got back a 2022 second-round pick; you can view the reported details here.

At face value, the trade looks like a win for both teams. For two late picks and an expiring contract, and a Utah Jazz future second way down the road in 2027, the Cavaliers added a 20-point scoring wing that improves the scoring dynamic of the team now and for the future.

For the Pacers, this seemed to be the value for LeVert around the league so adding draft capital and getting his money off the books should be considered a win.

Looking more at LeVert’s fit with the roster, his ability to score in the halfcourt is the biggest addition to the team. On the year, LeVert is averaging 18.7 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game on 44.7/32.3/76 shooting splits.

He also brings much-needed versatility with his ability to play both the shooting guard and small forward positions. In the past, LeVert has been someone who has both started and come off the bench which bodes well for the Cavaliers as they look to put him in the best positions for success.

If Collin Sexton returns, the Cavs will then have three go-to shot creators which only helps with their offense; we’ll have to see if Sexton, who seems likely to miss the rest of the season though, ends up being re-signed/back next season. He’ll be a restricted free agent this summer and LeVert will be extension-eligible.

With that said, in today’s article, we’ll look at two takeaways from the Caris LeVert trade for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
