Cavs Trade Rumors: Why trade Cedi Osman?

There is no rush on moving Cedi Osman at this year’s trade deadline. He is not on an expiring contract; to the contrary, he is on a descending deal for another two seasons past this one, with the final year guaranteed. That’s an incredibly reasonable contract for a rotation wing who isn’t a complete negative on either end of the court.

Last season Osman looked to be a fringe roster player at best, but he has had a major bounceback this season and may factor into the Cavs’ long-term plans. He is confident shooting off of movement and providing some small amount of tertiary ball-handling. He is also shooting just 36.1 percent from deep and is averaging just 1.7 assists per game.

If the Cavs re-sign Collin Sexton this summer as a part of their core, it will almost have to be as a high-minute bench player. Osman is significantly taller and more of a defensive asset, but players of an archetype like Dean Wade or Lamar Stevens would likely fit better on a second unit that has to survive defensively while playing Sexton and Kevin Love.

If the Cavs can get back a starting-caliber wing and need to send out Osman to do so, it’s a no-brainer. Players such as Harrison Barnes or Lu Dort would be well worth moving Osman. Yet a lesser deal, or one that simply pockets a mild asset to use down the line, becomes a more difficult proposition. Osman plays an important role for the Cavs right now, in a season where they are positioned to make noise in the postseason.

It depends on the deal, then; what might be out there for Osman?
