Monday, November 29th, 2021: Time To Take A Look At Cockburn

After being suspended by the NCAA for Illinois’ three early-season games, big man Kofi Cockburn is back out there on the court. On Monday he will match up with Notre Dame, and fortunately for the viewer, we should get to see all aspects of Cockburn’s play. Right now it looks like the Illini will likely be without guards Andre Curbello and Trent Frazier. I expect the Illini to feed the big man early, and on the defensive end of the floor, look for Cockburn to contest every shot he can.

There are a couple of things to watch for when tuning in tonight. One big problem the Illini have had all year is turnovers, and that should only get worse with Frazier and Curbello likely out. However, it will be a good chance to take a look at Cockburn as a possible point forward. His basketball IQ is very high, but he does need to work on his handles.

Finally, if you want to see a great college basketball rebounder, Cockburn is your guy. He’s helped raise Illinois’ offensive rebounding percentage instantly when he returned from suspension. The Illini should have no problem with Notre Dame this week, therefore it’s a great time to check out the Wooden Award candidate.
