Cavs: Dylan Windler needs to be getting more preseason reps
By Dan Gilinsky
The Cavs’ approach should be different leading into the season, as Windler could be an impact rotational shooter
I get that the Belmont product has had his injury problems, as we alluded to, and he needs to show that he can stay healthy for extended stretches of games this season. We all know that.
Even still, it’d be meaningful to get Windler more preseason reps, starting with the Cavaliers’ next preseason game versus the Indiana Pacers on Friday.
For a guy like Windler, who demonstrated plenty of range, movement shooting, and off-ball viability at Belmont, to go with some pull-up game, he needs to get into a rhythm. Cleveland and Bickerstaff would be in the right in doing so in upcoming preseason games, again, starting on Friday versus Indy.
I get that Bickerstaff is looking to implement a 10-man rotation, however, if he’s able to go from here, I personally think it’d be unwise to not at least utilize Windler pretty regularly in rotational minutes. If he can establish a nice rhythm, it could noticeably help Cleveland’s spacing and movement when he’s in there, and he could feasibly play at the 2 or 3, also.
If the reps don’t come for Windler, on the other hand, the Cavs might never see what they have in him.
So, hopefully, he’s in there more in preseason games; a DNP again on Friday would be puzzling, to me at least.
