The Cavs have learned that to get good wings, you need to draft them
The Cavs need to target a wing in the 2022 NBA Draft
With a young core of Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Okoro, Allen, and Mobley, the Cavs seem to be heading in the right direction going forward. But, to take the next step, and become a true playoff contender going forward, Altman and company must target a wing player in the 2022 NBA Draft.
There will be plenty of options, no matter where the Cavaliers draft pick falls. Even if the Cavs do make big strides this next season, it’s likely that their pick will fall in the lottery. Chet Holmgren, the 7-footer from Minnesota, is widely projected to be the first pick in next year’s draft. Even so, behind him are a flurry of wing players that would be a major improvement on Cleveland’s roster.
Jaden Hardy, who will play this upcoming season in the G-League, should be a great wing player going into the draft. Behind him, Caleb Houstan would also be a great choice. He played for the best high school program in the country in Montverde this past year. And he should only get better playing for Juwan Howard at Michigan. Even behind Houstan, there is AJ Griffin and Patrick Baldwin Jr.
Any way you slice it, the Cavs need more wing players. Not just wing players, but good wing players. Luckily for them, it looks like the 2022 NBA Draft will be filled with potential stars on the wing.
In the end, the offseason was a good one for Koby Altman and the Cavaliers. Evan Mobley will take some time to adjust to the strength of the NBA, but in the long run, he could be one of the best big men in the NBA. Darius Garland is a great point guard who can shoot and pass. Isaac Okoro could make a huge jump this year, if he does the things I wrote about a couple weeks ago. Collin Sexton is entering a huge year for him and the team, and how he plays could determine his future with the Cavs.
Overall the Cavaliers should be much better next season, but still not a true contender. To fall into that category, they need some good wing players, preferably through the draft.
