3’s a charm and “Magically Delicious!”

Like the leprechaun from the cereal Lucky Charms will exclaim in his famous TV commercials, being the No. 3 draft pick in the NBA draft has certainly acted more magical for two of the last three players drafted there. Those two players include Lamelo Ball, the 2020 NBA No. 3 draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets who is the reigning award winner. Back in 2018, it was No. 3 draft pick Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks who took home rookie honors.

Outside of the No. 1 draft pick winning the majority of past Rookie of the Year awards, the third pick has won it seven times throughout NBA history.

When you start looking at winners by position on the floor, centers and forwards have each won 15 times and point guards have won it 19 times in the history of the award dating back to 1953. That year a center/forward named Don Meineke from the old Fort Wayne Pistons won the trophy. The No. 1 pick hasn’t won the award since Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers did when he won after going first overall in the 2017 Draft.

With the history of the Cavs, having had Lebron James and Kyrie Irving win the award, I would find it somewhat fitting that being the No. 3 draft pick and being the third Cavs player to win it in their history. In fact it would seem somewhat magical.

Hopefully Mobley likes eating Lucky Charms cereal!
