3 Cavs players to watch in remaining games on road trip
Cavs to watch in remaining games of this roadie: Collin Sexton
Cleveland’s offense starts and ends with Collin Sexton. Sexton will surely want to put that Nuggets game in the rearview mirror by coming off his worst statistical performance of the season (four points, one-of-nine shooting, a minus-26 in 29 minutes).
Sexton does happen to face a Trail Blazers defense giving up 115.3 points per game, though, and he will not want Damian Lillard to outshine him considerably on Friday.
A big key for Sexton is to get his three-point shot going. He is connecting on 40.0 percent of his long-range attempts this month but is only taking 3.3 three-point shots per game. In fact, since his five-for-11 game from beyond the arc against the Brooklyn Nets, Sexton has only topped five attempts in a single game twice.
We’ve seen Sexton take and make three-point shots. It is just a matter of finding more of those opportunities throughout the game. Sexton loves going to that mid-range jump shot and floater, but with defenses game planning to stop him from getting into the lane, Collin can make teams pay by hitting his shots from beyond the arc.
Sexton can play off the ball more and hunt for open shots with his backcourt mate showing more promise as an overall point guard of late. Cleveland does not have the depth on the offensive end for Sexton to be passing up several quality three-point looks.
Yes, “Young Bull” is quick and can get past just about anyone off the dribble. But mixing in some more three-point shots will take his offensive game to even greater heights and will open up more opportunities for other Cavaliers to impact the game offensively.
