Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton is a player that has a truly rare work ethic.

One really can’t say enough about one thing in relation to Collin Sexton for the Cleveland Cavaliers: the kid has worked tirelessly to improve. In the scoring and perimeter shooting sense, in particular, the production backs that.

In the 2019-20 campaign, Sexton led the Cavaliers in scoring with 20.8 points per game, and his true shooting rate went from 52.0 percent to a better 56.0 percent. What continues to stand out from Sexton’s first two seasons with the Cavs, though, is his growth as again a perimeter shooter.

More from King James Gospel

One of the key weaknesses involving Sexton coming into the 2018 NBA Draft was his shooting beyond the arc, and it was seemingly unclear if he could be a viable catch-and-shoot three-point shooter. Sexton shot 33.6 percent from beyond the arc in his lone collegiate season at Alabama.

Throughout much of his rookie season, Sexton was somewhat unwilling to let three-pointers fly off-the-catch to a large degree, too, and tended to instead take his share of highly-contested mid-range looks instead.

Sexton has always been comfortable in the mid-range area, and although he still took his share of mid-range shots in year two, those were much more in-rhythm and less forced.

Anyway, on the plus side again, however, Sexton as a rookie shot 40.2 percent from three-point range, and in his second season, he shot 38.0 percent from downtown. This perceived weakness of Sexton’s coming into the NBA has frankly, turned into a strength of his game, especially off-the-catch.

That’s been great to see to me, too, and that, coupled with him showcasing the ability to change speeds off-the-bounce in year two, has only helped Sexton lean into a key role for the near future related to his all-around scoring. I expect Sexton’s spot-up efficiency to only get better in 2020-21, too.

Moreover, what is the reason for Sexton establishing himself as a floor spacer to help out pieces such as Kevin Love, Darius Garland and others is Sexton’s truly rare work ethic leading to his continued growth as a perimeter shooter.

In that realm, a recent clip of Sexton highlights his love for getting the work in, and that makes me so bullish on the Cleveland Cavaliers guard.

It’s no secret that Sexton is quite the worker, based on comments from teammates such as Love reportedly in media availability sessions, along with others, such as Larry Nance Jr. That’s something I always love to hear about.

With that sort of thing in mind, here was that recent clip of Sexton getting his work in, in terms of deep shooting and seemingly putting finishing touches on at least part of a workout with quite the jam.

Now I get that COVID-19 has probably led to perhaps more players to be inclined to do workout/shooting sessions of the late night variety, assuming the safety measures are in place. I get it, there’s likely less people seem comfortable doing from with the pandemic in mind.

At any rate, Sexton’s love for getting the work in is highlighted here, and front and center. Of course, I understand here with those thinking wow, an NBA player working on his game, whoop-dee-do.

I understand that, but Sexton’s love for the process and his commitment level, which has been well-documented throughout his Cavs tenure to this point, is a truly rare one. The dude is just different.

The 21-year-old has worked and worked and worked into becoming a pretty darn good perimeter shooter, and his improved strength helped him get better more near the basket in 2019-20, too.

So anyhow, while one could simply brush off this 35-second clip, when it comes to Sexton, to me, it just further emphasizes how much Sexton loves the game of basketball and how he’s never going to be outworked.

As a Cleveland Cavaliers fan, that to me is really comforting to know that he’s going to set the right example for others such as Kevin Porter Jr. on the squad, and you’d better believe the Young Bull is coming back with a vengeance in 2020-21.

I’m a fan of the yell at the end, too, Collin. Let them know.
