Cavs were spot-on in referencing Collin Sexton’s ‘fireworks performance’ vs C’s

The Cleveland Cavaliers flashed back to Collin Sexton’s career-high against the Boston Celtics on July 4, and were spot-on in how they highlighted that.

Collin Sexton is a player that’s only going to get better for the Cleveland Cavaliers, based on his tireless work ethic and how he took real strides in his second season, I believe.

While you would like to see Sexton display more passing feel in coming years, or at least make more extra passes when that’s appropriate, Sexton is a truly electric scorer.

More from King James Gospel

In 2019-20, Sexton led the Cavs in scoring with 20.8 points per game, and what jumps out with him is that his evenly distributed bucket-getting makes him so difficult to guard.

Sexton is quite the three-level scorer for Cleveland, and his continued growth in the catch-and-shoot perimeter game has been a pleasure to see, too.

Also, in Sexton’s last 15 games leading into the season’s novel coronavirus-induced hiatus, Sexton averaged 24.5 points per outing, to go with 4.3 assists and 1.0 steals per contest.

Sexton even seemed to hit another gear post-All-Star in which J.B. Bickerstaff took over the head coaching reigns, too.

In that 11-game stretch, Sexton put up 25.5 points per outing on 52.8 percent shooting, to go with 4.2 assists and 1.1 steals. Sure, Darius Garland missing five of those games with a left groin strain may have played into that a bit, but Sexton was rolling.

It’s evident that going into next season, from a scoring perspective, even with Kevin Love’s skill set, that Sexton should be the Cavs’ primary option.

Moreover, with Saturday being July 4 and the Cavaliers featuring Sexton this week among their players on social media platforms, the Cavs were spot-on in how they referenced Sexton’s “fireworks performance” on March 4. In that contest against the Boston Celtics, Sexton had a career-high 41 points on 17-of-30 shooting from the field, as KJG’s Robbie DiPaola previously highlighted.

Again, though, that pun got two thumbs-up from me from the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.

As DiPaola hit on, in that March 4 game versus the C’s, Sexton exploded in that one and was amid a stretch when he was playing the best basketball of his young career to this point. Against Boston, while the C’s were admittedly very banged up (though the Cavs did have some notable injuries as well), Sexton still had the full array working.

He was again really efficient in that game versus the C’s, and had the pull-ups and floaters going, and was continuously in attack mode as a driver, too.

In that contest, Sexton became just the third player in Cavs history to have 40-plus points before turning 22, joining only LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, according to Cavs Notes. Plus, he had six assists, coupled with that bucket-getting.

Unfortunately for the Young Bull and Kevin Love, who had 26 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, the end result wasn’t what they wanted. The Wine and Gold would fall to Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart and Boston in a close one 112-106, but that didn’t at all take away from Sexton’s unreal performance.

Again, with it on Saturday also being July 4, the Cavs were spot-on in referencing the Young Bull’s “fireworks performance” against the C’s on March 4. That even came after Sexton a few days earlier notched what was a then-career-high 32 points against the Utah Jazz, too.

This one on Saturday was a fitting and spot-on tweet from the Wine and Gold in regards to Sexton. Clearly going forward, there will be tons of more fireworks from the Young Bull as well.

He’s truly just getting started, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him in 2020-21 and beyond.
