Sexton’s development appears ahead of schedule

Sexton looks like a completely different player now than he did a couple months ago when he made his debut. The game appeared to be too fast for him and he didn’t know how to use his speed and athleticism to his advantage. This left us with a young player who some on the team thought didn’t know how to play.

Those criticisms seem further and further in the rear view mirror each passing game. Sexton has done an excellent job of learning how and when to use his speed to his advantage in the halfcourt. The rookie did a great job of getting to the basket by changing speeds and using his athleticism around the rim to his advantage.

Sexton also did a good job of reading the defense and taking uncontested midrange shots when they presented themselves.

Although mid-range shots are inefficient, an open jumper for a team like this without much scoring power is almost always a good thing.

The most impressive thing about Sexton’s development has been his rapid improvement. He struggled in his first few Summer League games as he appeared unpolished and even in over his head. That quickly changed as he adapted to the environment and speed of the game. He improved throughout Summer League and became one of the best players in the league as he carried the Cavs to the semi-finals of the tournament. Improving that quickly in Summer League is encouraging, but making this quick of a jump in the NBA is impressive.

Sexton isn’t a finished product, but each game he gives us glimpses of how skilled and athletic a player he is. He has the tools to become great in this league especially if he continues to show this type of work ethic and will to win.

The Cavs will look to extend their winning streak to three games as they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday night.
