Canton Charge take on Delaware 87ers

Felder’s five-game stint with the Canton Charge started on February 24th as the Canton Charge took on the Delaware 87ers.

In that contest, Felder was simply sensational. He finished 32 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds (not far off from his season averages of 30.6 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game). Felder was efficient, going 13-25 from the field and 2-3 from three-point range. He also went 4-6 from the charity stripe.

What stood out most about this game was Felder’s ability to score after getting a screen, as he used the pick to score from all three levels. In defending the pick-and-roll, which has long been seen as a big obstacle for the undersized floor general, Felder plays back from the ball-handler positions his body in ways that minimize the amount of contact the screener will make with him. Though the ball-handler gets extra space in these situations, big men are ICED and Felder uses his exceptional burst and agility to cover the space between he and the ball-handler before he penetrates the lane. He had trouble guarding an equally quick and crafty Nate Robinson at times. However, other times he positioned himself in ways that prevented Robinson from getting the ball at all.

Though the 87ers defeated the Charge 117-110, this is perhaps the first game where Felder’s developing basketball IQ was on display on both ends.
