LeBron James has been the worst nightmare of the Atlanta Hawks, and in last year’s Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Cleveland Cavaliers shot the birds out of the gym in Game 2. That’s this week’s Flashback Friday.

It was May 4, 2016, with the Cleveland Cavaliers looking to take care of business at home, and take a 2-0 series lead against the well-coached Hawks. They did just that, as the Wine and Golders were steaming hot from the jump, taking a 35-20 advantage after one.

The second quarter was when things started to get out of hand.  J.R. Smith really got the three-point barrage started. It was classic Swish, he was making spot up treys from all over the floor, and put then-opponent Kyle Korver on skates in a cold move that led to the most J.R. skip ever.

Swish’s sharpshooting savagery totaled seven threes in just 28 minutes. His fearless shooting was infectious to the rest of the squad, as LBJ was also stroking at a high level from deep. James had 27 points in 28 minutes, including four-of-six from three. It didn’t stop there, as Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, and Richard Jefferson combined to go nine-for-eleven on trey bombs.

For the game, the Cavs shot 55.6% from three-point land, and there was nothing the hopeless Hawks could do to stop it.  They ended up knocking in 25 for the game. According to NBA Stats, that set the record for threes made in any NBA game, regular season or playoffs.

This game is yet another reminder that the Cavs now have Korver, and they’re getting J.R. back relatively soon. Obviously, nobody cares about getting three-point records, it’s about adding to the ring total. I know that, but records are pretty cool, too. Besides, this is something else we can be petty about in regards to the Golden State Warriors. I’m pretty sure Cleveland should hold an annual day off on “3-1 day” at this point, and why not?

Moreover, the Cavs have a road-heavy month ahead to sort out their rotation, and the next bump in the road is Atlanta tonight. I expect the King to be feeding Korver early and often against his former team, and a win should be expected. No J.R. skips in this one, unfortunately. He’s saving that for the playoffs.
