New Orleans Pelicans
What We Expected: Too many scorers, not enough balls. Unibrow to make the leap. Pray for the best, hope for the worst.
What We’ve Seen: First and foremost: a terrifying mascot. Secondly, the Pelicans have a lot to look forward to and may be even closer to getting back into the playoff race than many pundits predicted. After dominating pre-season, expectations were perhaps set a bit too high, but there have been real flashes from this young squad. Anthony Davis hasn’t gotten enough touches, but he makes his presence known. The struggle of sharing the ball between several shoot-first-ask-questions-later guards hasn’t completely vanished, but this early success has mitigated it somewhat. This team clearly doesn’t want to wait. This isn’t Philadelphia playing out of its mind and achieving some early season fool’s gold. The Pelicans are playing really well (roughly half the time) and getting to know one another’s habits and inclinations. They might be a problem sooner than we thought.
In One Month: Hovering around .500 and beating good teams but failing to take care of business against the dregs.
