Georges Niang is overpaid
To pick back up a theme from the first two slides, players in free agency tend to be overvalued by the market simply because they are available. Let’s add another layer: shooting tends to be overvalued the most, as every team can use shooting.
That’s why Georges Niang received a 3-year, $26 million contract this summer. The Cleveland Cavaliers badly needed to add shooters and the options weren’t exactly overpowering. They elected to take a hard-working competitor with size who is a knockdown shooter, filling a clear need on the roster.
The problem being, of course, that NIang does little else to deserve nearly $9 million per season. He is a willing but ultimately poor defender, he is a below-average rebounder for his position, and his ball skills leave much to be desired. He’s a shooter, plain and simple, and the Cavs will need to carefully insulate him with ball-handlers and defenders when he is on the court.

Niang isn’t grossly overpaid, but he’s probably more like a $5-6 million player than an $8-9 million one. He checks in as our final entry on this list, beating out Isaac Okoro to make the cut. The value the Cavs are getting from their stars helps them overpay the middle class, and they hope that balance helps them win in the playoffs this season.
