Free Agent No. 2: Danny Green, Wing

No one is questioning the Cavaliers’ decisions to move on from and replace their back-end bench pieces from last season. Robin Lopez, Dylan Windler and Raul Neto are all being replaced in the opening days of free agency. The one player the Cavaliers should not replace is Danny Green.

Instead, the Cavs should look to bring back the three-time champion. He has the potential to play a key role on the court and off of it for the Cavaliers. As a 14-year veteran who has played in 169 playoff games, he brings something to the locker room that this group doesn’t have, and he can teach them how to get to the Finals. That sort of leadership is hard to measure but no less important to a rising team.

On the court, Green remains one of the best shooters in the league, a skill the Cavs clearly value and can never get enough of. His defense was shaky last season, but that all took place within a year of tearing his ACL. Players tend to perform much better athletically once they get a year or more out from their injury, and Green should therefore play even better next season.

If Green gets a large offer somewhere, the Cavs shouldn’t match; they added Max Strus to primarily fill that 3-and-D role. Yet if the cost is the veteran’s minimum, they should absolutely try to keep Green in the fold.
