Former Cavaliers No. 2: Tristan Thompson

Every great team has a couple of role players who float in and out of the starting lineup or rotation, giving their all when called upon and shifting into a smaller role when it’s better for the team. Few players did so as well as Tristan Thompson, who was whatever the Cavaliers needed during their run.

The big man is just 32 years old and still has his size, strength and veteran guile. He hopped onto the Los Angeles Lakers just prior to the end of the season and even played minutes in the NBA Playoffs, proving he still has something in the tank.

The Mavericks are going to be paper thin up front, with JaVale McGee the only lock to be sticking around. Christian Wood is unlikely to be retained, while Dwight Powell may be pushed out financially if the team adds LeBron James. Maxi Kleber could be part of the trade package for LeBron, and LeBron himself hates playing center if he doesn’t have to.

That’s where inexpensive size will be so important, and Thompson fits the bill. He likely can’t play 80 games anymore, but having a small role and being a part of the locker room could be worth the roster spot and the minimum contract.
