One free agent target for Cavaliers from each remaining playoff team
Free Agent Target No. 2: Torrey Craig, Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns are finding their Second Round opponent much more difficult than their first one, and the heroes of the series against the Denver Nuggets continue to be identified. In the Suns’ 4-1 victory over the LA Clippers, however, one player stepped up to become the “fifth man” for Phoenix.
That would be Torrey Craig. He didn’t drop 40 points like Devin Booker or Kevin Durant, but he demonstrated his value as the fifth starter the Suns were looking for. The 6’7″ wing has always been a good defender, but this season and in the playoffs he has shown he can be a difference-maker on offense as well. He has hit 39.5 percent of his 3-pointers this season, likewise averaging career-highs in rebounds, assists and blocks.
The Cavaliers desperately need 3-and-D wings, and specifically, a player to fill that final starting spot. Craig isn’t the best such player who fits that mold in the league, but he may be the best such player available this summer. His contract with the Suns expires, and their financial constraints might mean they cannot bring him back.
In that scenario, the Cavs can offer a deal using much of the Full MLE, more than the Suns could pay him anyway. Craig could step into the starting lineup and provide versatility on defense and floor-spacing on offense. If we could get a peek at the Cavs’ free agent big board, Craig is likely right at the top alongside players such as Harrison Barnes and the final player on our list.
