Center Prospect No. 3: Drew Timme, Gonzaga

Drew Timme has been one of the best players in college basketball for three years running, a dominant interior scorer who played for one of the best programs in the nation. He appears set to finally leave school and start his professional career, and he is a truly puzzling prospect.

On the one hand, Timme can absolutely score the basketball. He has elite touch around the basket, has increased his range out to the 3-point line, and he has the vision to hit cutting teammates as well working from the post or the elbow.

On the other hand, Timme was a terrible defender in college, and he will be absolutely destroyed trying to defend NBA athletes. Any team interested in Timme will need to recognize that he will offer very little on that end; he’s an offense-only reserve big.

That’s likely not what the Cavaliers need, but the good thing is that Timme’s stock is so low that they can probably sign him as an undrafted free agent. Timme will either find a way to improve defensively, become a great shooter and carve out a long NBA career…or he won’t, and he’ll be playing overseas by this time next year.
