3 disastrous mistakes Cavaliers must avoid making this summer
The Cavaliers must avoid selling low on Ricky Rubio and Dean Wade
Ricky Rubio had a tough season. Out of all 388 players in the league who played at least 400 minutes, his true shooting percentage was the third-worst. That’s not good. Dean Wade, once thought to be the best option to fill the fifth starting position, was completely outside the rotation in the playoffs after Game 1.
The Cavaliers will need to make upgrades this offseason, and if they find a trade target they will need matching salary. It’s very possible Rubio or Wade find themselves sent to another team this offseason. The problem is that trading one or both now would be selling low on players who were once key reserves and could very well be again.
There is a good reason to expect both to be much better next season than they were this year. Rubio will be 18 months removed from his ACL injury, while Wade will have had time to fully heal and rework his shot after a nasty shoulder injury and subsequent follow-up injuries. Not only could both prove themselves as part of the Cavs’ rotation next season, bounce-back years would also increase their trade value.
Koby Altman and the Cavaliers have a busy offseason ahead of them, and plenty of difficult decisions to make. Someone will disagree with any move they make, but these three potential mistakes stand out as the disasters that the Cavs need to avoid. Will they steer clear of the rocks this summer?
