Donovan Mitchell has given the Cleveland Cavaliers another dimension on the offensive end of the floor with his shot creation, driving and creativity as a three-level scorer. He’s given the team a different level of star power this season, and his past offseason trade arrival eased some of the workload for Darius Garland in the process.

There’s inherently been some ups and downs, and it took a bunch to trade for him in the deal with the Utah Jazz, but by and large, Mitchell has been everything one could’ve expected and then some in his first year with the Cavaliers.

This season, Mitchell has had career-bests in points (27.6) and true shooting percentage (60.6), and he’s still connected on 38.0 percent of his three-point attempts on the season. Mitchell’s combination of deep range, on-ball, transition and ball handling abilities have led to him being one of the league’s best scoring guards this season, and in a whole new situation with the Cavs.

After he made the last three All-Star contests with Utah, Mitchell got the nod to be an All-Star starter for the first time in 2023 as well. Now, him playing in his past home arena and the fan element contributed some to that, but Mitchell was more than deserving with what he’s given the Cavaliers.

He’s had his share of big-time scoring outputs for the Cavs this season, and throughout his six seasons thus far, he has been a terrific bucket-getter. And in Cleveland’s close loss at the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night, Mitchell became the fastest player in league history to surpass the 10,000-point plateau and hit 1,000 three-point shots, in what was in 410 games, via Cavs Notes. He’s now at 10,031 points and 1,189 triples for his career.

This was yet another incredible feat from Mitchell, who was outstanding for the Jazz, has been for the Cavs and should continue to be.

Mitchell had 44 points on Tuesday night, in which he was five-of-12 from three-point range. He was nine-of-nine from the free throw line as well, and had several ferocious dunks in the game, which were just the latest in a season full of highlight reel plays from the 26-year-old.

The Cavaliers were not able to land the victory, in which Jarrett Allen and Isaac Okoro could’ve definitely aided the group on the defensive end. It was still a game where the Cavs were right there, and Mitchell, Garland and Evan Mobley all played well.

As it pertains to the aforementioned milestone for Mitchell, it’s obviously been a more three-point-centric league since he’s been involved, and he was hoisting a ton with Utah before Cleveland. This season, he’s been seventh in threes attempted as well, for what it’s worth.

Having said that, him being the first to surpass those said milestones above is an incredible feat, make no mistake. It showcases how Mitchell has long been one of the games’ top scorers, has been able to fill it up everywhere on the floor, and how he’s made his share of big shots.

This is yet another impressive scoring achievement from Mitchell, who has had plenty of them. Whether it was the 71-point game earlier this season, him being seventh all time in playoff points per game in his time with Utah, or him being now tied with LeBron James for the most 40-point games in a single season in Cavs history (via NBA History), he’s long been a bucket.
