Cavaliers point guard draft prospects: Tyrese Proctor, Fr, Duke

Duke University has placed a large number of players into the NBA, with current stars like Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero encompassing a wide range of play styles and positions. They have a number of point guards playing in the league right now, from Irving to the Jones brothers (Tyus and Tre) and past players like Quinn Cook, Chris Duhon and Jay Williams.

Tyrese Proctor is the latest in the line of high-level Duke point guards, joining the Blue Devils from Australia as a freshman this season. He reclassified to join Duke a year early, and his age and slow start to the season could lead him to stick around in Durham for another season.

If he comes out, however, he is an intriguing prospect for the Cavs to consider. He has excellent size at 6’5″ and can defend multiple positions, so it’s reasonable for him to play alongside either Darius Garland or Donovan Mitchell. His 3-point shot has come around later in the year, and since he has shifted to playing point full-time his offense and Duke’s offense have taken off.

Duke has a tough first-round matchup and could lose right off the bat, but they also have the potential to make a deep run. Proctor has a shot to play himself into the first round, or at the least to do well enough to declare for the draft and be a candidate for the Cavs in the middle of the second.
