College stars for Cavaliers No. 1: Keyontae Johnson, Kansas State

Keyontae Johnson was once a star at Florida, placing on the All-SEC First Team in 2020 as a sophomore. Then in December of that year he collapsed on the court during a game and spent time in a medically induced coma. It was commonly thought that due to a heart condition, Johnson would never play another minute of college basketball.

He never gave up his dream of continuing his career, however, and although he wasn’t cleared to play again by the SEC he found his way to  Kansas State this year. He had a dominant season for the Wildcats this year, winning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and placing on the First-team All-Big 12.

He averaged 17.8 points, seven rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 42.4 percent from 3-point range. He is 6’6″ but with the length and strength of an even larger player, and he projects as someone who can play small forward in the NBA. The Norfolk, Virginia native could be a solid source of wing depth for the Cavs.

Because of his heart condition and age (22 years old already) he will almost certainly fall out of the first round, and it’s realistic that he could be available when the Cavs pick in the middle of the round. Kansas State is ranked 12th in the country and should be set for a deep tournament run, making Johnson a player to watch this month.
