Who should the Cavaliers sign – Convert a two-way player

This would be the path of greatest continuity. The Cavaliers currently have a pair of two-way players who are ineligible for the postseason. If they would like to use either Mamadi Diakite or Isaiah Mobley in the playoffs they will need to convert them to a full contract to fill that 15th roster spot.

Mamadi Diakite has had the most run with the Cavs this season, and he had that one memorable game swarming Joel Embiid alongside Evan Mobley when Cleveland blew out the 76ers earlier this season in Jarrett Allen’s absence. Signing Diakite to a contract past this year would also be the best path to retaining him, as Mobley can stay on a two-way deal next season; Diakite cannot.

The flip side is to sign the player absolutely beasting in the G League this season. Isaiah Mobley has been one of the best bigs in the G League, helping the Cleveland Charge become one of the dominant forces in the league. He has more size than Diakite and is the most likely to be a part of the Cavs’ plans moving forward.

Neither player would crack the healthy rotation, but either one could provide stylistic versatility alongside Robin Lopez should Allen or Evan Mobley go down. This decision would straddle helping now and helping down the road, locking up a big who could contribute more in future seasons.
