The Cleveland Cavaliers are prepping for the stretch run. While winning games, building chemistry and securing a premium seed are all important, the top goal is reaching the postseason with a healthy roster and the deepest possible stable of players to weather injuries.

The team also needs to balance the future, and how to be a contending team not just this season but for multiple years. With a 15th roster spot that will come open again in a week, the Cavs have a chance to add a player either for now or for future seasons.

How should the Cavaliers use their final roster spot? Who should they sign? Let’s look at the three categories of answers.

Who should the Cavaliers sign – Veteran free agent

The first category is to pick up one of the veteran free agents on the market. This is a possibility that we looked into earlier in the week in more detail, but the bottom line is that this route would give the Cavs more protection from injuries during the playoff run.

No player that they sign is going to crack the rotation immediately, but they can provide important redundancies if someone were to go down. A shot-blocking big like Nerlens Noel could be emergency Evan Mobley insurance, while someone like Carmelo Anthony could be instant-offense if they lose Donovan Mitchell.

Signing a veteran to that final spot, especially after adding Danny Green already, would be a low-upside break-in-case-of-emergency move. It wouldn’t provide much if any value moving forward, but it could be useful in a worst-case scenario.
