Better trade target: Malik Beasley, Utah Jazz

Doug McDermott is a gifted shooter who gets up 7.7 3-point attempts per 36 minutes. Malik Beasley gets up 11.5 per 36 minutes, an elite rate that leads the entire NBA, a sliver ahead of Klay Thompson (to be fair, Beasley would be just behind Stephen Curry if the other Splash Brother had played enough games to qualify; excellent company he is keeping).

Making 3-pointers is a valuable skill, but taking that many certainly is too. Defenders can’t leave Beasley for a moment because he is a threat to pull the second he receives the ball. He has plenty of shot utility to take and make 3-pointers coming off of screens.

Beasley’s percentage from beyond the arc is down a bit this season at 35.9 percent, but given his career track record and strong free-throw shooting (not to mention the beauty of his shooting stroke) and you can easily make the case for a rebound or at least regression to the mean.

The contract for Beasley is a bit steeper at $15.5 million this season, but a team option for next year gives the Cavaliers or whoever trades for him flexibility in a pinch. His shooting volume and shot versatility make him an excellent movement shooter and he would be a great addition to the Cavs’ rotation.
