Looking at a Cavaliers trade for a veteran wing

A natural partner for a trade would be a rebuilding squad, a team with no chance of playoff aspirations but plenty of veteran trade options. Selling their veterans can be a way to maximize this transition period. The Cavs could find a deal with just such a rebuilding team, like the San Antonio Spurs, as suggested by Dan Favale of Bleacher Report:

Josh Richardson is something of an NBA journeyman, playing for four teams in the last five seasons (after four straight in Miami to start his career). He is a tough-nosed defender with a developing offensive game; he was an on-ball creator to start his career, but he has morphed into an off-ball shooter over the past few seasons as he has transitioned into being a role player.

The Spurs are full-speed ahead in the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes and don’t have a use for Richardson, and they are much better off moving him for something of value now than hanging on to him long-term. Turning him into a young, defensive wing is exactly the sort of move they should consider for all of their veterans.
