3 players the Cavaliers could sign on 10-day contracts
No.2: Kris Dunn
As the saying goes, defense wins championships, and Kris Dunn is one of the best defensive guards in the whole league, and he isn’t even on an NBA roster right now. The Cavaliers’ guard play isn’t going to lock down any opposing guards, as both Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell aren’t known as superb defenders (even though Mitchell has made strides as a defender this season). Sure, Isaac Okoro is a great defender, but he probably would be best-suited guarding the opposing team’s best wing.
This is where Kris Dunn would come into play. Say the Cavs faced off against the Brooklyn Nets in the playoffs. Maybe Okoro would be matched on to Kyrie Irving, or maybe Kris Dunn would be tasked with Irving. Or if the Cavs were to play the Atlanta Hawks, Dunn could be guarding Trae Young. Dunn averages 2.3 steals per-36 minutes for his career, which is always a great sign to see.
In Dunn’s last season for the Chicago Bulls, he had a defensive rating of 106.0. This defensive rating was one of the league’s best, not even just for a guard. His defensive abilities were the main reason he was drafted 5th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, and his defense is still immaculate to this day.
Sure, he isn’t the best playmaker or shooter in the world for a point guard, which shouldn’t be glossed over. The Cavs are a below average playmaking team, getting 23.9 assists per game, which ranks 9th-worst in the league. Dunn’s assists per game in his career is 4.2, which isn’t awful, but could be better. Also, he has shot 29.9% from distance in his career, which is also not a pretty sight to see. However, his skill set could be really helpful to a Cavaliers team that doesn’t have a lot of tremendous perimeter defenders.
