Hot start for Cavs trade targets: Royce O’Neale

The old hymn says that if the oceans were made of ink and the skies made of parchment, there still wouldn’t be enough to write about the love of God. The Brooklyn Nets are quickly approaching the level of organizational dysfunction where if every basketball writer on earth spent every day typing about their chaos and failure there would still be more to say.

The Nets’ season may contort itself into a painful attempt to keep trying to win games, but there is a very good chance it falls completely apart in the coming days. There is an ever-growing chance that Kevin Durant requests a trade (again), the Nets cut Kyrie Irving loose and look to sell their veteran role players and attempt a quick rebuild.

If that happens, the Cavs should pick up the phone and call about Royce O’Neale. The longtime Utah Jazz wing has morphed himself into a sharpshooter from deep, hitting 42.6 percent of his 3-pointers this season on a robust six attempts per game. His defense has slipped as he nears 30, but he is savvy and strong enough to at least hold his own.

The Cavs could use a player comfortable shooting a high volume of 3-pointers and hitting them at a high level; every team could. If Isaac Okoro continues to offer nothing as an offensive player, O’Neale can take his place in the rotation at the very least, and provides insurance for other injuries on the team. Obviously, the cost for O’Neale is important, but if the Cavs are able to pay it he could be a great veteran addition down the stretch.
