Cavs 2022-23 Season Preview: The Accolades

Last season was a decorated one for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Two players were named All-Stars, point guard Darius Garland and center Jarrett Allen. Garland finished in the top-three in Most Improved, Kevin Love was the runner-up for Sixth Man of the Year and Evan Mobley just missed on Rookie of the Year.

Will this year be more of the same? The individual awards may be more difficult this time around, as every award has significant competition. Evan Mobley is a candidate for Most Improved this year, and an outside candidate for Defensive Player of the Year. Kevin Love should be in the mix for Sixth Man of the Year award again.

Where the Cavs should truly shine is by recognizing the sheer star power on the team. Three Cavs were All-Stars last season, a fact matched only by the Golden State Warriors. It’s likely that they can only get three this season barring a truly dominant start, but it’s not unreasonable to think that Donovan Mitchell, Garland and Mobley will be All-Stars.

Can a member of the Cavaliers win MVP? Probably not this season, as they bring more of an ensemble cast to the court. A truly electric shooting year from Mitchell or Garland could perhaps get them close.

Finally, what about off the court? J.B. Bickerstaff could get some Coach of the Year buzz, but they took a big step forward last season and have growing expectations this year. More likely is that a strong season lands Koby Altman the Executive of the Year award for the Mitchell trade.
