3 players who have impressed for Cavs: Mamadi Diakite

We’re going deep for this final player, but the competition at the bottom of the roster is just as interesting as the one at the top. With just 14 players under contract the Cavs have an opening for someone to earn a roster spot during the preseason, and Mamadi Diakite has made the loudest audition tape of anyone in camp.

The former Virginia Cavalier turned Cleveland Cavalier is an efficient 7-for-8 from the field in two preseason games. Some of those have been finishes when another player creates a shot, but he has also hammered home an offensive rebound and pulled off an impressive spin move up-and-under in traffic, a move he didn’t have in college.

The Cavs are unlikely to waive Isaiah Mobley this year no matter how well Diakite plays, but it’s possible they decide to bolster their big rotation rather than their wings by signing Diakite. If so, it will be a spot he earned by filling his role and playing bigger than his size inside.

With two preseason games left to go, there is plenty of time for other players to step up and show their stuff. There is also time for these three players to fall down to earth. Right now, though, all three are proving something to the team and it could result in a reward down the road.
