3 key areas the Cavs should improve in 2022-23 – No.1: Overall scoring

As I mentioned earlier, the Cavs surprised a lot of people last year with their “big” lineup, and tough defense. They were fifth in the NBA in scoring defense, holding their opponents to just under 106 points per game. However, at times during the season the Cavaliers had a lot of trouble scoring. It was evident that in big moments, outside of Darius Garland, there was really no one else on the team who could create his own shot, or create a shot for others.

This season, things should be quite different with the addition of Mitchell. The Louisville product put up just under 26 points per game last season, and he did so efficiently, shooting 45% from the field, and 36% from deep. While Mitchell is a star talent on the offensive end, he also averaged a steal and a half each game, which should give the Cavaliers more fastbreak opportunities. Objectively, his defense does need to improve, but Mitchell can help push pace.

When I look at where the Cavaliers finished in scoring last year, it’s hard for me to believe they will be that poor once again this year. By bringing in Mitchell the Cavs added a player who can handle the ball when Garland is resting, and Mitchell can also create for himself and for others.

After averaging just under 108 points per game last season, they should improve their scoring by at least a couple points considering how dynamic of a player Mitchell is. He can help them ignite runs as a result, too, and his offense will help create more open looks consistently.
