One of these roster cut candidates could fill Cavs last spot: Kemba Walker

The Cleveland Cavaliers don’t need any more small guards. They have Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell and Ricky Rubio as rotation locks under 6’3”, and Raul Neto as an underrated 6’1” option off the bench as well. Sharife Cooper is an intriguing option on the training camp roster.

Yet Kemba Walker is not just any small guard. He is a four-time All-Star and offensively magical point guard who is likely to get bought out by the Detroit Pistons. The Cavs don’t need Walker to log minutes except in an emergency, but what Walker can bring is another mentor role a la Ricky Rubio last season.

Walker knows the small-guard tricks of the trade, He knows how to use a screen to get a sliver of space and launch a 3; he knows how to snake through a paint filled with towering trees and still get a layup to go. Rubio taught Garland how to level up as a passer last season; Walker can show him how to level up as a scorer.

It’s not the best use of the spot, especially since Rubio is back with this roster, but it’s an idea. One of these players would give the Cavs experience at the 15th spot and Cleveland should kick the tires on all of them were they to get cut from their current teams.
