One of these roster cut candidates could fill Cavs last spot: Maurice Harkless

The Houston Rockets are the current landing spot of a player who has spent his career traveling around the NBA, suiting up for six teams in 10 years, and in the last few months has moved from Sacramento to Atlanta to Oklahoma City to Houston. The Rockets will need to cut multiple players from their roster, and as they embrace their youth movement Maurice Harkless is almost certain to be on the chopping block.

Maurice Harkless is not a star, and he is no longer a starter on a good team. He is still a very solid veteran wing, with 621 games and 371 starts under his belt. His 3-point shot runs hot and cold, but unfortunately for his career it’s been cold most of the time the past few seasons.

At 6’7” Harkless has great size for a forward, and he has oscillated between the 3 and the 4 with various teams. His last great seasons were with Portland five years ago, but he is only 29 and should have a high enough floor to be called upon when injuries strike.

Last season playing on the Sacramento Kings and their bottom-five defense, Harkless still managed to log a positive Defensive EPM (Estimated Plus-Minus). He can be tossed into a lineup and take on whatever assignment is asked of him and hold his own. Especially if the team moves Lamar Stevens, say in a Jae Crowder trade, Harkless could be solid depth in replacement.
