The Cleveland Cavaliers are in search of one final player to fill out their roster complement of 15 players heading into the 2022-23 NBA season. They currently have 14 players under contract, including Lamar Stevens’ non-guaranteed deal, and a handful of players on training camp deals who could fill the spot.

The Cavs can also look outside the organization to fill the final spot on the team, identifying a veteran who can step in and provide some leadership and experience alongside their play on the court. Trading for such a player may cost a nominal asset and matching salary, but signing one to a minimum deal would keep Cleveland comfortably under the luxury tax and cost them nothing but that salary.

A number of veterans are candidates to be cut from their rosters in the next few weeks. Could one of them fill the Cavs’ 15th and final spot on their own roster?

There are a few interesting players still on the open market, but the Cavs should be keeping their eyes on who is poised to enter that market. A number of teams around the league have the opposite problem from the Cavs: they have more than 15 players currently under contract and need to cut one or more by the start of the season.

These “roster cut candidates” represent players who will hit free agency afresh during preseason, and with the Cavs poised as an up-and-coming playoff contender, they could be an attractive landing spot. Which veterans are potentially going to be cut by their current teams and could help fill out the Cavaliers’ depth?
