Grading Dean Wade extension with Cavs from all angles: Contract value

Dean Wade represented one of the biggest non-star values in the league this season. Depending on his role and the minutes he would play, Wade is in line to generate anywhere from $6-12 million in value this season, but will make just $1.9 million.

That sort of value should extend to the following seasons as well. This extension will cover Wade’s age 27-29 seasons, so it will hit directly in his prime. As a player who doesn’t rely overly much on his athleticism, Wade’s game of strength and shooting should age well, helping him to hold his value.

In 2023-24, when the extension begins, Dean Wade is in line to make $5.7 million, which would place him around 176th in terms of salary before you even account for next summer’s free agents. He will almost certainly be outside the Top 200 in player salaries. As the cap continues to go up, an average of $6.17 million will be a pittance against the salary cap.

Wade is clearly a value on his current deal, and much of that excess value will be eaten up by the increase in pay. If Wade continues to be a part of the rotation, it should be at least fair value. If Wade spends time in the starting or closing lineups, and/or if his shot improves, this turns into a bargain for the Cavs.
