Cavs, Donovan Mitchell press conference takeaway 2: Excited about Cleveland

Cleveland is a cold city outside of the main throughways of culture and fashion; it’s not exactly a “destination” for NBA players. Yet Mitchell was effusive right off the bat about the city. He said “I love the cold” and proclaimed that he thinks he dresses better in the cold. He also said that where he plays isn’t about market size, it’s about winning basketball. “The off-court stuff will take care of itself if you win.”

Additionally, MItchell has affection for Cleveland, specifically. He cheered for LeBron James as a kid, especially after attending The Decision in person (it was held in his hometown). When asked how a NY kid became a Cleveland fan, his answer? “LeBron.”

Mitchell was also touched by the reception. He landed in Cleveland around 9am and was met with a sea of fans lining the route. He loves the area’s passion for sports. He’s also looking forward to attending a lot of Browns and Guardians games, something he didn’t get to do in Salt Lake City.

Cavs, Donovan Mitchell press conference takeaway 3: Reunion with Ricky Rubio

Ricky Rubio was on the Utah Jazz for two seasons early in Mitchell’s career, and he was effusive in his praise and affection for the veteran point guard. He said that “Rubio helps young guards become All-Stars” which he did with MItchell in Utah and Darius Garland in Cleveland.

Back when they were teammates Rubio took Mitchell under his wing, teaching him a lot and hanging out with him. Mitchell even traveled to Spain to see Rubio and watch him play at one time. He leaned on Rubio as a leader in Utah until Mitchell was ready to step up and be a vocal leader of the team.
