Cavs NBA 2K23 ratings are off for these Cavs: Isaac Okoro

Isaac Okoro is expected to be the early front-runner to start for the Cleveland Cavaliers, although Caris LeVert is still in the running and Dean Wade deserves a look. NBA 2K23 tapped Okoro as the expected starter as well, and his overall rating of 75 seems fine given where he is in his career.

If you break that rating down, however, things start to get a bit more questionable. Okoro deserves solid marks in athleticism, and his inside scoring got a respectable rating, a good call given his cutting and finishing ability. From there, though, things got a bit bizarre.

First, Okoro was rated at just 69 on defense. Defense, also known as Okoro’s calling card. This probably speaks to the statistical projection system the game uses to build out players; they can’t break down film on 450 players, after all. Okoro had a poor defensive season as a rookie when asked to defend the best opposing player each game.

Last season Okoro was much better, and deserves to have a rating somewhat higher than 69. Mitchell, as detailed above, has a 71 rating on defense and is a markedly worse defender than Okoro.

What’s interesting is that with that poor defensive rating, what helps boost Okoro to a 75 is his perimeter offense. He got a 78 rating on his 3-point shot and a 95 rating on “Shot IQ” – probably because he took so few 3-pointers last season and was a respectable 35 percent on them. His selective shot-taking was not some high level of shot intelligence but a reluctance to shoot, even when he was wide open. For Okoro to be a long-term piece for the Cavs he has to significantly improve his accuracy and volume. He’s not a “B+” in this area as the game has pegged him to be.

Overall the NBA 2K games go an excellent job rating players, and everyone will have different opinions on where players should land. It’s a monumental task to rank these players, and so it’s unsurprising that they made some mistakes. These players are the three most glaring misses in NBA 2k23 for the Cavs roster.
