How many players would Cavs trade Evan Mobley for? One-way stars
We are nearing the end of the line, which should be illustrating just how valuable Evan Mobley is: a very young, inexpensive, two-way potential superstar. Here we land with the group of incredibly talented and productive offensive stars in the NBA, the kind of players who could win a title with the right group around them, but most likely are too flawed as defensive players to truly be the best player on a championship team.
This group includes both ascending young stars in Ja Morant and Trae Young and established superstars like Damian Lillard, plus Devin Booker and Donovan Mitchell. You may want to toss in another player or two that falls into another category as well — James Harden, Kyrie Irving — or players likely a little further down the rung, such as Karl-Anthony Towns and Bradley Beal.
Wherever you draw the line, these players limit a team’s championship ceiling because they are weakspots in the defense for the opponent to attack. They need the absolute perfect ecosystem around them to win a title, or more likely need to be the second-star alongside a true top-10, two-way force.
Mobley is already a defensive star, and may be a generational talent on that end. His offensive development will dictate if he falls along the lines of Bam Adebayo (good on offense, elite on defense), Anthony Davis (great on offense, elite on defense) or Kevin Garnett (elite on offense, destroyer of worlds on defense). That upside means the Cavs can’t move him for a player who is capped as a one-way force.
Verdict: No
