3 reasons Caris LeVert should start at shooting guard for Cavs
3 reasons Caris LeVert should start at SG: Secondary shot creator
Darius Garland developed into a dynamic on-ball scorer at the point guard position last season, a well-deserving finalist for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award and an All-Star. The Cavs look justified in making the decision to start building around Garland as their star of the future.
The problem they ran into for much of last year was that they didn’t have a second offensive creator to pair with Garland. Opposing teams were able to throw doubles and stunts at Garland without fearing that another player would break them down in rotation. The Cavs have some potential options to address that, including the development of Evan Mobley and the return of Collin Sexton, but LeVert would be an obvious answer as well.
LeVert would give the starting offense a ball-handler who can challenge switches and attack advantage situations, including the passing chops to hit the Cavs’ rollers and cutters. Any time he spends on-ball would also allow Garland to move off-ball and spot-up for juicy 3-point attempts.
Last season the Cavs started Isaac Okoro, who is a rugged defender but offers exceptionally little by means of shot creation or playmaking. LeVert isn’t the most efficient player in the league, but his skills would seem to fit the needs for the Cavs in their starting group.
