3 reasons a Kevin Durant trade would affect the Cavs

The Kevin Durant trade saga continues to drag on and on. The Brooklyn Nets only want to trade their superstar top-5 player for a record-setting package, and teams are reluctant to overpay because they want to still compete for a title once he arrives. The Cleveland Cavaliers have little interest for just that sort of reason; their team is built to win later, not win now, and trading two of their three young stars would put them outside the ring of contention even with Durant in town. That doesn’t mean that a trade isn’t of interest to the Cavs, however.

There is a possibility that the Nets go into Training Camp and even the 2022-23 NBA season with Durant still on the roster, hoping that he will decide to suit up and play out the season. That looks less likely after Durant met with owner Joe Tsai and told him that the Nets needed to trade him or fire both general manager Sean Marks and head coach Steve Nash.

If and when the Nets do trade Durant, it will matter for the Cavs. They are highly unlikely to be his landing spot, but the shockwaves out from this superstar trade will have a number of effects on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Let’s break down three of the most important.
