Every fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the NBA as a whole, has heard about the rumors of LeBron James returning to the Cavs in free agency next summer. James has done it before, coming home after four years in Miami, and it could have happened again.

The key date for such a possibility was August 4th, when LeBron James became eligible for an extension on his current contract. Sign the extension, and he would lose most of his agency in choosing a new destination – and certainly the ability to sign with a team in free agency so they didn’t have to lose any assets to compete around him. If that date passed with no news of an extension, the possibility he left to come back to Cleveland would increase.

LeBron James just signed a contract extension to stay with the Lakers. Why does that mean that Collin Sexton could now re-sign with the Cavs?

James and the Lakers waited two extra weeks to increase the tension, but Wednesday it was announced that he was signing an extension. The two-year, $97.1 million extension will kick in not this season but the next, 2023-24, and includes a player option for the 2024-25 season. The deal is also tied to the cap, and if it raises a significant amount with the new television deal the total value of the two-year extension could leap to $111 million.

LeBron James is now off the market for the Cavs to sign in free agency next summer. Does that fact cause the Cavs to come back to the negotiations table with their last free agent this season, Collin Sexton? After weeks of an impasse on a new deal, could LeBron James’ extension with the Lakers lead to the return of Sexton? Let’s look at why that might be the case.
