These 3 bench players will be awesome for Cavs next season: Collin Sexton
For the purposes of this piece, we are assuming that Collin Sexton re-signs with the team, either by accepting his qualifying offer or coming to terms on a new contract. Their negotiations have stretched out for the entire summer, but a lack of other suitors makes it exceedingly likely that Sexton will be back.
If he is, the Cavs will deploy him as an on-ball creator off the bench, running the offense and attacking the rim. He is effective in that role, and will fare better against opposing bench lineups than with the starters. There is absolutely a place for Sexton to come off the bench and average 15 points per game and make his own case for Sixth Man of the Year.
The untapped potential is if Sexton can embrace his off-ball game. He is a decent shooter on his own, but when he launches a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer his efficiency soars. A lineup where Garland or Rubio are creating shots and Kevin Love and Sexton are raining 3s will make defenders get out their umbrellas.
The Cavs have tentpole stars to build their starting lineup on, but they also are flush with talented players off the bench. These three players – Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Collin Sexton – could form one of the league’s best bench trios, and be a major part of the Cavs not just putting together another solid season, but an awesome one that propels them fully into the playoffs.
