What positions would Cavs play on Browns? Darius Garland – Slot Reciever

Slot receiver is a relatively new position in the NFL, where a wide receiver plays almost exclusively inside with another receiver further out. Wes Welker popularized it with the New England Patriots, and others such as Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman have as well. Now teams have realized that they can play larger receivers in the slot, and the so-called “big slot” is taking the league by storm.

For example, Chris Godwin does most of his damage from the slot, and stands at 6’1″, just above average for an NFL receiver and significantly taller than the tiny slot receivers of last decade. Darius Garland may be one of the smallest players on a basketball court but he has plenty of size for football, and could similarly fill that “big slot” role.

It would be perfect for Garland because of his ability to change his speed and stop on a dime, which should lead to precise route running inside. When he does catch the ball he has tremendous breakaway speed to outdistance himself from receivers.

The Cleveland Browns don’t have the slot spoken for necessarily, assuming Amari Cooper will play outside, so he could get in the mix with rookie David Bell to see snaps. The Browns could even institute a package for a WR option, with Garland getting the ball behind the line of scrimmage and passing it himself, flexing his passing skills too.
