Could Cavs trade Caris LeVert to Heat? Final Verdict

There are a few significant impediments to getting such a deal done. First, the Cavs would lose a large chunk of their cap space for next summer. They were unlikely to be a major free agent destination, and if LeBron James does signal his intentions to return they could always move a contract off of their books to open up the space.

Another issue is that the Cavs front office clearly likes LeVert. Would a few bad games to end the year change their opinion of him? Finally, the Cavs don’t have Collin Sexton locked up yet, and losing both LeVert and Sexton would then put them at a major shot creation disadvantage. Keeping and playing both would be difficult; losing both would be worse.

If the Cavs and Sexton come to an agreement, however, then trading for Robinson makes a lot of sense. He adds a dimension they don’t have, and if Markkanen can improve his shot they would have a nasty shooting combination between Garland and the two bigs, putting maximum strain on opposing defenses. Robinson isn’t an elite defender but he’s not as bad as the narrative around him, and playing in front of the Cavs’ front line will help mitigate that; his size advantage at the 2 balances a lot out.

The Cavs should absolutely be looking for trade options for Caris LeVert, as he is a good player who doesn’t fit super well with this roster. They could make it work, and likely shall, but looking around at the league could net a trade for a player who fits even better, and Duncan Robinson and the Miami Heat fit the bill.
