Cavs trade idea with Rockets: Would Sexton be on board?

It’s unclear exactly how Collin Sexton would rank his priorities. If his top one above all were winning, he probably would accept the Cavaliers’ modest offer, prove he can help a team win, and hit the open market in a couple of seasons ready for a payday. Clearly the money matters.

Most of all, however, I suspect that Sexton wants to start and have the ball in his hands a lot. He sees himself as an on-ball star, and that he is good enough in that role to then help a team win. In Houston, he will be playing alongside Jalen Green, who would certainly handle the ball a lot, but their other tentpole young building block is Jabari Smith Jr., a talented two-way player that is not going to be dominating the ball. That leaves plenty of rock for Sexton to handle.

Houston is a team where Sexton can be the veteran voice, where he can be a leader and have a chance to start. The winning won’t be there right away, but he could easily believe he is the right option to lead them in that direction. If Houston gives Sexton a reasonable contract and a chance to start, that may match his priorities enough to make this a good fit. Texas’ lack of income tax would certainly help, too.
