Goal #2: Shoot 75 percent from the free throw line

The final goal for Allen coming into next season would greatly help his points per game average. That goal is to shoot 75% from the charity stripe. Over his career, Allen has averaged 69.9% from the free throw line. This is something that is to be expected of a player with the game of Allen’s. He plays as a traditional big man who dominates the paint on both sides of the ball. As a result of this, he has not really developed much of a shot.

He has started experimenting with the three-point shot, but there is still a lot of work to be done on that front. Last year, Allen shot 10% from three and 70.8% from the free throw line. It is great to see that he is experimenting with the three ball. He still has an ample amount of time in his career to get his shot down and begin consistently making threes before he retires. If he can develop an outside shot, it would do wonders for the Cavs’ offense.

On the plus side, whether or not threes can come, Allen has shown tangible growth as an interior presence on-ball. His improvements with push shots and a budding hook shot are things that were impressive from him last season, and perhaps he can build on that.

Anyway, if Allen can get his free throw percentage up to 75%, there is no doubt that he will be able to average around 17 points per game and that will likely be enough to get him back to the All-Star Game. Along with this, it will make him much more playable if the Cavaliers go on a playoff run this next year.

Year after year, we have seen players with similar games as Allen’s get benched in the playoffs because of their inability to get it done at the free throw line, they are unable to stretch the floor, and they are too slow to defend against smaller lineups. While Allen does not struggle against small-ball teams, the other two points could keep him from seeing the minutes he deserves in the playoffs.

If he can get in front of these potential issues and achieve that 75% from the line this season, it would not only benefit his game, but also the Cavaliers’ chances in their potential playoff run.
